This is book 1 in the Lin Coffin Mystery series.
After the death of her grandfather, Lin Coffin returns to the island of her birth, Nantucket, Massachusetts, to make a new start in life, but things don't begin smoothly. After not seeing one for twenty years, a ghost appears in her back yard and her cousin, Viv, becomes a suspect in a murder. Lin and Viv, with the help of several others, work to solve the crime before the killer strikes again.
This story has ghosts and some mild paranormal elements.

There are writers and there are authors. Writers publish books, regardless of quality; authors tell stories; again, regardless of quality. Whiting is an outstanding writer and author, telling stories with believable characters with clear and reasonable motivation, good pacing and dialogue. She is also a great writer who can tell the difference between 'there' and 'their'; present and past tense, and who has access to (and USES!) spell-check. There are too many authors out there in e-book-land who seem to think that because they can self-publish, they SHOULD self-publish - often without the benefit of an editor or even a proof-reader. Coming across Whiting's books, therefore, is an absolute delight. Each of her series sticks to it's own tone, from breezy/cozy to serious. All are an excellent read. (Plus, she really gets cats...) My recommendation is to read everything she has written.Product details

A Haunted Murder A Lin Coffin Mystery Book 1 edition by J A Whiting Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Lin Coffin, returns to Nantucket, the place of her birth, after the death of her grandfather, who raised her following her parent's deaths. Lin's secret is that as a child she could see spirits, but that was twenty years ago and they stopped appearing to her. Shortly after she gets settled in, a local businessman who had begun harassing her cousin is found murdered, and the cousin may be considered a suspect. Also the spirits seemed to have returned. Mysteries and murder is in store now for Lin to solve before she finds that her own life may be in danger.
I was learning to use my and thought this series was affordable and interesting, at least on the blurb. Interesting? Vastly interesting would cover it. The characters of Carolin, Viv, Nicky, and Queenie just endure themselves to you. They show family love and loyalty but not at a sweet sickening level. Then we are introduced to other characters that are equally enduring, even a bit 'spirit'ual.
The story is compelling and kept me turning the virtual pages at a click. Please give this book a go.
I love this books, and all the books in the series. I've read all of them. They are fun reads, with plot twists and interesting characters. Ms. Whiting developed the main, recurring characters very well in this book, and continued to develop them in the other nine books. I enjoyed every minute of reading them and will definitely go back and read them all a second time in a couple of years. I have been reading mysteries for more years than I care to think about and am usually pretty good at figuring out who the villain is...but not in these books. I haven't gotten one right!
I only gave a four star review because there were two quirks. The first is that Ms.Whiting does not use the word "of" where it should be used...a habit that Nora Roberts also has. I don't understand why this word is constantly left out. Example..."a couple hours" rather than "a couple of hours." The second quirk, in my eyes, is her mention ad nauseum of the car Danielle drives, a Ford Flex. Everyone else just has a car...Danielle's car is the only one mention by make and model number in all the book, multiple times in many of them. I almost have to wonder if Ford is paying her to tout the car. I hope this isn't going to be a new trend in advertising!
Lin Coffin returns to the island of her childhood. Before Lin can blink, she is tiptoeing around a murder mystery. Her best friend Viv, and little dog Nick are along for the adventure.
Some of Lin's memories of long ago come creeping back and seem just out of the reach of her mind. It's a little bit of Nancy Drew, a little just becoming a young adult and a little bit of 'what things like this are real?' It's an easy reading story that won't invade your dreams after turning off the bedroom light at night.
Yes, I will read the next book in this series.
Lin Coffin inherits her grandfather's house in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and decides to pack up and move there, acquiring a gardening business to supplement her work-from-home IT gig. This gives her quite a bit of time to roam the island, as any cozy mystery lead needs to do. She and her cousin, Viv, uncover a mystery when the man trying to cajole Viv into selling her home ends up dead before they figure out why he was so adamant about buying Viv's house when his business was going under. Lin and Viv try and make sense of it all, all while Lin readjusts to seeing ghosts, an ability she's been able to suppress since childhood.
Very short, so not much time for character development, but there's a foundation here. I imagine the rest of the series will build on this. Would like to hear more "local" descriptions. Nantucket is a great place, and rather underrepresented in the descriptions here.
I actually enjoyed this book even though the dialog was stilted. The side characters were not well developed and the author attempted to throw the reader off with false characterizations. I'm don't mind a little misdirection, but it should be subtle.
I know that this genre is not intended for scholars, but I read a lot of these light, cozy mysteries since I have very little time to read and am not looking for something that requires analytical thinking.
Still, I'm going to stick it out with this author for another book or two to see how she develops.
This is a very simple cozy mystery. No real character development, everything falls way too neatly into place. And the author uses 30 words whete 3 would do. One of those that feels like the author was paid by the word. Why else would the line "Nicky, the little brown dog" appear no less than 3 times on the same page, then repeatedly throughout the book. Just tedious to read. This won't keep you up at night, afraid of what goes bump in the night. Or eagerly reading to see what happens next.
